General Dynamics Mission Systems
Greensboro, NC
Please briefly describe your current job
I'm a member of the GEOSIC team (Geophysical Environmental Oceanographic System Implementation Center) at General Dynamics Mission Systems in Greensboro, NC. We are responsible for linking the engineering and design of a submarine cabled system to the marine environment. I assist in pulling together oceanographic, bathymetric, and geophysical data that assist in the design, installation, performance, survivability assessment, and repair of the systems.
What is your favorite part of your current position
I get to travel as much or as little as I want. I help create survey plans for hydrographic and bathymetric missions, and have the opportunity to be on the vessel to assist in the data collection effort. I also work with amazing colleagues who, in their own ways, make our group a crown jewel of the company.
How did your EAS education prepare you for your current job?
My favorite parts of EAS were professors and administrators who were always willing to talk you through coursework issues or career/post-graduate decision making. I think the EAS courses overall prepared me to work hard regardless of the circumstances. Every challenge I faced as an undergraduate has made me a stronger and more independent graduate student. My research experiences and teamwork in classes built a foundation that has set me apart from other masters students. Specifically, class projects in EAS Field Methods, Structural Geology, and Exploration Seismology gave me a background for success in graduate courses. The academic knowledge I learned laid an incredibly solid foundation for me to build on in graduate school and onward. Almost everything I do today has some link back to a class or lab I had as a requirement during my time as an EAS undergrad.
What do you wish you had known as an EAS undergraduate in order to land the job of your dreams?
I wish I had known to be less afraid of taking risks and then asking for help when I needed it.
