Descriptions of the awards offered to undergraduate and graduate students within the School of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences. Awards are presented at the end of the spring semester during the department's end-of-the-year celebration.
Quarter-Century Award
An annual award to recognize the most outstanding undergraduate senior(s) in EAS. Any undergraduate student who is now a senior registered as a major in EAS, and who has completed the junior-level EAS core courses is eligible. The award will be based on criteria that include grade point average for work at Georgia Tech and the quality of work such as a term paper, a course research-project report, an in-house report, or a student-written report of work during an internship with a company.
Rutt Bridges Award
The Rutt Bridges Undergraduate Research Initiative identifies and supports self-motivated undergraduate students. Students with the courage to undertake their own research in EAS and with the initiative to carry out and complete the study through the preparation of a publication are encouraged to apply. A goal of the support provided by this initiative is to allow the student the freedom to move a research project in a direction that leads to a publication and to encourage collaboration with a faculty member in EAS.
All undergraduate majors in EAS at GT are eligible to apply. Recipients may reapply for an award in subsequent years so long as they are in good academic standing. There is an additional constraint that at least one-half of the awards in a given year must go to students who are studying earth science.
Glen Cass Award
Preference for contributions to environmental studies.
John Bradshaw Award
Preference for students emphasizing instrumentation.
Research Excellence Award
An award to a student for excellence in research, as judged primarily on the basis of the creativity and independence exhibited by the student in conduct of the research. Any person who has been an EAS graduate student in the current fiscal year is eligible for this award; however, the award will not normally go to a student who has been in the EAS graduate program for more than five (5 years).
Best Paper Award
An award to a student for the best refereed paper or series of refereed papers, published or accepted for publication by the time of selection, for which the student is the first author. Any person who has been an EAS graduate student in the current fiscal year is eligible for this award; however, the award will not normally go to a student who has been in the EAS graduate program for more than five (5 years).
