Sylvia Chan is a 4th year Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences undergraduate major with a focus on oceanography. Her specific interests lie with paleoclimatology and paleoceanography via coral geochemistry and current circulation.  She currently researches at Dr. Isaiah Bolden’s lab, focusing on Jamaican coral growth variability and skeletal geochemistry, is a member of the Sigma Gamma Epsilon (Earth Science Honor Society) and STorm club (Tech’s student chapter of the American Meteorological Society), and worked as a Explore Student Assistant for the College of Sciences EXPLORE LLC program for two years. Because of her research, she was awarded third place for best undergraduate poster presentations at the 12th Annual Southeastern Biogeochemistry Symposium (SBS 2025). Additionally, Sylvia is a 2024-2026 Ernest F. Hollings Scholar, which gave her the opportunity to travel to Seattle, Washington for a NOAA internship position working on shellfish nutrient removal in the summer of 2025. She enjoys writing short stories, gaming, hanging out with friends, and reading.
